I wrote the book having spent so many years in the dark about nutrition, foods, disease and their actual cures. Nutritional Truths allows me to share all the information that everyone should know in one concise book allowing the readers to investigate further the truths that matter most to them.

Have you ever thought of writing a book and publishing it? When you finally do you will find it either harder or easier than you think. It’s one of those unknowns until it is complete and ready for print at which point is editing and re-editing again and again happens. When this happens, the perfectionist may never complete the project since chasing one’s tail comes easy at this stage and making the book available to the public has to be more important than perfection.

Once Nutritional Truths was published, I was under the illusion that the heavy lifting was over, but it had only just begun. Marketing, promoting and selling one’s book takes more effort than I would have guessed. There are still avenues I have begun to explore in order to promote it further and am always open to your ideas.

Four, Seven, Eight, read this blog to Sleep Great!

Sleep has been proven as a truly important part of our overall health and longevity. A recent study found that people who sleep less than 7 hours a night had an increased risk of death at 21% for women and 26% for men. If sleep medications are used, those risks jump up to 31% for men and 39% for women. Eight uninterrupted hours should be the goal when sleeping.

In my book Nutritional Truths I speak to avoiding electronic anything, at least, an hour before sleeping to allow the mind to “wind-down” and begin preparing to rest. As we sleep, our bodies focus on repairing and regenerating our bodies cells. When we fail to allow this process to take places a myriad of ills may befall us.

Lucky for me I have almost always been the type who after my head hits the pillow I am asleep within three minutes with few exceptions. I know many have issues falling asleep and after learning a trick that Dr. Weil has shared I will share it with you here, and I have had it confirmed that it does indeed work very well.

The exercise is known as the 4-7-8 technique, and Dr. Weil calls it a “natural tranquilizer for the nervous system.” Outside of sleeping the good doctor recommends this exercise to help you lower stress. Try it for yourself and see how well it relaxes you.

Here is the process:
1. Place the tip of your tongue against the tissue on the roof of your mouth directly behind your upper front teeth and hold it there throughout the process.
2. Fully exhale through only your mouth while making a whoosh sound.
3. Close your mouth and inhale fully through only your nose to a mental count of four.
4. Hold your breath for a mental count of seven.
5. Exhale fully through your mouth creating whoosh sound to a mental count of eight.
6. Completing one full breath, now inhale and repeat the cycle up to three more times.

I look forward to hearing how it works for you! It’s suggested that one does no more than seven cycles in a row. Most often after only a couple of cycles, you will wake up realizing that it worked well for you and smile knowing that access to sleep is now just a few breaths away!

God Food

Many of us grew up in a home where meals came from a drive through or out of a box, bag, can or container. Therefore, today fresh vegetables often do not reside at the top of our list of things we crave to eat. Fat, salt, and sugar are at the top of that list because that is how we are hardwired. Understand that at the time of our wiring we did not have a drive through on every corner or grocery stores filled to the brim with fake foods.

All processed carbohydrates (buns, coatings, fries) behave like sugar in our brains making fast food, and most processed foods hit on all three cylinders and then there’s the copious MSG added. Examining the Standard American Diet the vegetable we most consume are potatoes, fried potatoes. All supported by the amount of fast and restaurant foods we eat. Although potatoes do offer some nutrition when baked, the sweet potato has more to offer us nutrition wise.

Growing up, my idea of a vegetable outside of potatoes was green beans or spinach fresh out of the can. Iceberg lettuce tomatoes and cucumber would make an appearance on the occasional spaghetti night. It was not until I learned about holistic health did I come to realize how many vegetables support health and help keep disease away.

Organic vegetables are full of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and antioxidants all to support our wellness. I refer to vegetables as God food or food that loves you back. Foods created by God trump foods made by man every time!

The easiest way to fill yourself with more veggies is either to fill your blender half full with greens and then make a smoothie. Many favor young beet, chard & kale greens or spinach. Add frozen bananas, berries, almond milk or coconut water, maybe ground flax, chia or hemp hearts and you’re all set.

You can also finely dice up zucchini, yellow squash, carrots or use the food processor and add them to any meat or non-meat sauces, loafs, meatballs or patties. Invest $30 in a spiralizer and use zucchini or squash in place of pasta and don’t forget spaghetti squash for another way to sneak more veggies onto the dinner table.

Organic vegetables feed our bodies and mind better than anything you can get from a drive-through, box, bag, can or container. If the vegetables are raw, then all the enzymes are in play. If you’re only into sharing your love with those that love you back, then become more familiar with a true love, vegetables.

An Apple a Day!

One of Americas favorite fruits the apple is more popular today than ever and with very good reason. What once were the only apples marketed in the US were Red and Golden Delicious and Granny Smith and though still popular today, the varieties have grown.

It turns out there are dozens of verities grown and available, many year round. Today we find Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady, Honeycrisp, Cortland, Empire and many more. Some sweeter and crisper than others.
ninety percent of the pesticides and fifty percent of the vitamins are in the skin. So eat only organic apples and keep the skin on. Apples are full of fiber, water and phytonutrients that serve the body very well. An apple a day is good and three a day are likely better!

As we move into winter the apples in the store will begin coming in from New Zeeland and the prices will begin going up. Consider adding more of them to your own diet and they are also great with almond butter!

Vitamins and You in the New Year

Welcome to 2016 may you achieve all the outcomes you desire in this new year! Many folks have set their intentions on changes they wish in the new year and I am no exception. Twelve hours in and so far so good:) Enjoy this first day of 2016!

To know winter squash is to love winter squash

Few things come to mind faster than a pumpkin when it comes to thoughts of fall. A heavy fall crop, winter squash offers many variables and wanted to make sure you know how amazing it is for the body.

Its history dates back over 10,000 years from an area between Guatemala and Mexico as a food source though originally it was just the seeds that were eaten as the flesh was thin and bitter. Christopher Columbus took them back to Europe where they began to be cultivated.

A couple of the greatest things about consuming winter squash is that it is full of antioxidants and is an anti-inflammatory food of which we can never eat enough of. Full of vitamins A, C, B6, Manganese, copper, potassium, B2, folate, K, Omega 3 fats, magnesium, and B3.

In addition to being a nutritional friend to our bodies winter squash also helps regulate blood sugar and insulin in addition to being an amazing source of fiber.

Not prone to sharing recipes, I have to include this one as it is one of my favorites and is such a hearty vegan recipe that you have to try it! Feel free to make flavor variations that suit your taste. Have an amazing weekend, share if you like, eat some squash soon and Be Well!

Brett’s Autumn Hugs Hearty Squash Soup
• One large to medium butternut squash
• One acorn squash
• Two tablespoons coconut oil
• One white onion finely diced
• One teaspoon real salt
• One teaspoon white pepper
• One teaspoon ground nutmeg
• One teaspoon onion powder
• One teaspoon grounds ginger/garlic paste
• Seeds of 8 green and four black cardamom-ground
• 4 cups (1 large box) vegetable stock
• 2 cups soaked cashews (4 hours min)
• 2 cups of coconut water or water

Cut squashes in half, clean out seeds, brush flesh with coconut oil and sprinkle salt, pepper and nutmeg. Place face down on a sheet pan and bake in the oven for 60 minutes at 350. In a high-speed blender puree the soaked cashews and coconut water for several minutes, set aside. In a stock pot place remainder of coconut oil and onion, cook 5-7 minutes till translucent, then toss in other spices and ground cardamoms and allow to sizzle for up to a minute.

Add cashew mix and then add the flesh of both squashes. Once complete use an immersion blender to break things down as smooth as you like it, but not completely. This recipe delivers a thick and hearty soup and unless you’re dead set on a perfectly smooth soup try it with the small chunks in it. Top with freshly toasted pumpkin seeds and enjoy. This pot of soup serves several and if given an extra day for flavors to marry, all the better!

We spent every moment not asleep or in a school outside in the 1970’s on our suburban residential street of 3/2 homes. Half a dozen of us in the front yard playing touch football, hide and seek, mother may I, or just sitting, laying down, running around, freeze tag, whatever, we were outside. We were all almost always barefoot since the lawns we played in were mostly grass.

Our immune system does well with a strong supply of electrons, and they can be had for free and in abundance via ones barefoot contact with the Earth. Seated or even lying down on the Earth will bathe you in electrons. Since inflammation is always a concern, these electrons produce antioxidants that help suppress it.

Not too long ago there were fewer issues with humans grounding, from all the time spent outside barefoot or wearing shoes with soles made of leather since electrons can pass through leather. However today plastic and rubber in footwear block the electrons from transferring and that coupled with many spending more time inside means much less grounding. We get to shift to spending more time outside barefooted. Once you begin to do it you will soon likely understand why folks rave about it.

In addition to consuming more things fresh from the Earth spend more time outside listening to nature and connecting with the surface of your planet. Doing so at this time will serve you well.
